Effect and Status on the Independence Promotion Program of Home Visitting Serviced Elderly in Rural Area

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify the effect and status of a 16-task training program developed to improve functional independence of the elderly.

Methods : The subjects of the study were elders aged 65 or over living at home in M-Gun area. The two groups that one was intervention group(n=100) and the other was control group(n=99). Home visiting nurses worked as a trainner and surveyer. The contents of the study were assessed at a pretest and at 6 months later that 16items of independent living, depression, cognitive functions, activity index with Shimanouchi`s instrument. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test and Cronbach`s Alpa test with SPSS/WIN 14.0program.

Results : 91.9% of the subject were female, average age of the subject was 77.0 yrs. There was the general characteristics homogeneity of intervention and control group. The weight of the cognitive function was 20.1¡¾3.23, depression weight was 10.0, ADL was 28.2(on average 4.7), IADL was 44.6(on average 4.1) so that mean ¡®possible do¡¯. The frequence of performance among the independence promote program was increased in 12tasks among the total 16tasks, and improvement of ADL and IADL and activity index. But cognitive function was not significantly difference, and depression was not improved significantly.

Conclusion : The 16-task training program was effective, and recommended for home visiting elderly who require basic care assistance.
